What is Personal Branding on LinkedIn?

Personal branding on LinkedIn is about shaping how people see you professionally. It’s the process of building a clear, unique identity that sets you apart, whether you're looking for job opportunities, attracting clients, or positioning yourself as an expert. Personal branding showcases who you are, what you do, and why it matters.

Some people naturally stand out with their personality and expertise, while others must be more intentional about crafting their brand. Either way, the key is to be authentic. People can spot inauthenticity from a mile away, and nothing damages credibility faster than coming across as fake or insincere.

Building a Strong LinkedIn Brand

On LinkedIn, your brand is reflected in everything from your profile picture and headline to the content you share and how you engage with others. The best brands are consistent, relatable, and memorable. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about being honest, sharing your insights, and letting people see the value you bring.

Why Build a Personal Brand on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn is such a powerful tool! The platform has been around for 18 years. It has established itself as the most trusted social network in the U.S. (73% of social media users agree that LinkedIn protects their privacy and data, compared to 53% for Facebook).

Let’s look at why LinkedIn is the best platform for building your brand.

It’s Scalable

While LinkedIn only allows you to have up to 30,000 connections, there are 310 million active monthly users on LinkedIn. That means the reach potential of people seeing your profile and content is tremendous!

You can easily reach millions by building a strong personal brand and updating your profile to be a strong landing page. More reach equals more leads. 79% of marketers see LinkedIn as an excellent source for leads!

LinkedIn is The Most Trusted Platform.

While people spend more time on other social media networks, they invest time and money on LinkedIn. According to Insider Intelligence’s 2020 Digital Trust Report, LinkedIn ranked as the most trusted platform for 4 years.

By creating and building your brand on LinkedIn, you validate your trustworthiness and establish credibility. People care about authenticity.

You Show Up on Google

LinkedIn’s platform operates as a search engine, and SEO plays a massive role in how you can be found. Whenever you create a LinkedIn profile, a public version is shared with their member directory, so search engines like Google index and populate your results!

Because you’re easily found on Google, we highly recommend optimizing your LinkedIn page as a landing page to showcase your skills, expertise, and personal brand.

Launched Creator Mode

LinkedIn cares about creators and releases new updates to help users build an audience and amplify their voice. It introduced Creator Mode, which makes it easier for users to showcase their content and grow their reach.

LinkedIn says, “Turning on creator mode more prominently displays your content and encourages others to follow you.”

Features of Creator mode:

  • Connect button changes to Follow
  • The number of followers you have displayed in your profile
  • You can select to display your content topics
  • Featured and Activity sections will show first
  • Your Activity section will showcase more of your recent content as opposed to your engagement activity on others

Why LinkedIn Rewards Creators

Why is this important? LinkedIn values its creators. Since only the top 1% of users consistently post valuable content, LinkedIn finds ways to support them and boost their efforts. As the platform's membership increases, you can shine and take advantage of the high demand for valuable content and the low supply of creators.

The best part? Because few creators generate content daily, the potential for organic reach and growth is substantial. LinkedIn is such a powerful platform; creating content doesn’t need to be complicated. Text posts work very well, so you don’t have to worry about curating high quality photos or videos to get noticed, like you do for other social media platforms.

7 Best LinkedIn Personal Branding Tips for a Successful Brand

1. Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile for Search

Your LinkedIn profile photo is an integral part of your professional branding. You want to appear professional while showing that you are human and friendly. Choose a good profile photo—smile and maintain eye contact in the shot to appear more approachable. Avoid group photos, personal photos, or those with a busy background.

Craft a Killer LinkedIn Headline

Spend time crafting a killer headline. It’s one of the most visible parts of your LinkedIn profile and plays a massive role in whether someone reaches out or moves on. Your headline is a window into your brand, so make it count.

Keep it short and sweet—grab attention in as few words as possible. Put the benefits up front to help others understand what they’ll gain from you. Don’t confuse people about who you are and your brand's identity.

Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile Visibility

Set your LinkedIn profile to public. When your profile is private, only your job history is visible, meaning people won’t be able to see your posts, content, or complete skill set. To make your profile public, go to Privacy Settings > Profile Visibility > On The Internet and select “Yes.”

Use industry-specific keywords throughout your profile. This will help your profile appear more frequently in searches. Add relevant industry lingo and experience-based phrases to improve visibility.

2. Use Your Description to Sell Yourself

Your summary is where you define yourself in your own words, free of start dates and titles. It’s your brand elevator pitch – use it to sell yourself and encapsulate all the wonderful things you bring. Make sure it communicates my core values to potential clients.

Be concise and summarise skills and features that matter. Display interests in a particular industry and position yourself as an expert. I should be professional, but I shouldn’t be afraid to show a bit of my personality!

3. Get Creative with Your LinkedIn Banner Design

Your LinkedIn banner image helps to tell your brand story to your contacts! It provides an immediate first impression when users land on your page and enables you to stand out.

This could include anything from imagery representing who you are and what you do to a simple infographic of my services. When used as banner images, infographics help communicate information more quickly than paragraphs of plain text.

4. Create High-Quality Authoritative Content

Having a great LinkedIn profile isn’t enough, I also need to publish quality content to showcase my expertise and engage my target market. Posting valuable content helps position me as an industry expert while providing insights to potential clients and readers who may not connect with me through traditional networking. This is an opportunity to demonstrate my knowledge and establish credibility.

A strong content strategy includes a mix of different types of posts:

Short-form Articles (Posts)

These are limited to 1,300 characters. To create a post, click “Add Content” at the top of my profile and select “Write a Post.” Share insights, knowledge, relevant content, and links to additional resources. Posts can feature photos, videos, documents, and even interactive Polls.

LinkedIn Articles

I can post full-length articles on my profile and share them with my connections or in relevant groups. This helps bring more valuable content to LinkedIn and directs readers to my page, increasing visibility. LinkedIn Articles can include:

  • Images
  • Video links
  • Slides
  • Other rich media like:
    • Tweets
    • Instagram posts

Documents as Carousel Posts

For more detailed or visually engaging content, I can upload multi-page PDFs as carousel-style posts on LinkedIn from my homepage, a group, or a LinkedIn Page. These documents can cover topics like:

  • Career advice
  • Culture stories
  • Industry insights
  • Event content
  • Portfolios
  • Knowledge sharing

5. Interact with Your Community

Commenting on other people’s posts promotes conversations that might lead to new connections and collaborations. It also positions me as an expert and active contributor to the platform.

Engage in Groups & LinkedIn Answers

Joining discussion groups provides good exposure and often leads to valuable real-world connections, professionally and socially. Being involved in these discussions shows my interest and engagement in the industry, making it a worthwhile effort.

Answering questions in LinkedIn Answers showcases the type of advice and insights I provide. The more I use this tool, the stronger my brand becomes. I start with 50 free monthly credits, but I need to use them wisely since these are limited.

6. Engage Industry Influencers

LinkedIn Influencers can be anyone from executives to bloggers, authors, and thought leaders I follow for their insight or knowledge in my industry. Leveraging these influencers is one of the best ways to increase social engagement and grow my brand on LinkedIn.

Start by finding the top influencers in my personal or professional field. Follow them and share their content on LinkedIn to earn a potential endorsement. I can also quote an influencer on LinkedIn and @mention them – this will get the influencer's and their audience's visibility.

7. Go Live with LinkedIn Live

Perhaps the most powerful personal brand builder of them all, yet the most frightening for most of us! Going live on LinkedIn is not as easy as going live on other platforms, as it requires me to go through an approval process and evaluation. LinkedIn asks for references of different video content, so it’s a good idea to get going (LIVE!) on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to build up a bank of solid content for my applications.

Once I am successful with my LinkedIn Live application, I can schedule lives, stream directly to LinkedIn Events, and bring my community together in the most authentic, interactive way.

We all love a freebie, and sharing a few on LinkedIn not only strengthens your brand but also encourages others to share them with their network. Focus on creating e-books, templates, or PDFs that offer value to your audience and help make their lives a little easier.
