What Should Be Included in Your LinkedIn Promotion Announcement?

Before posting, make sure your promotion is officially confirmed. That means all internal approvals are complete, your new title is formalized, and it has been communicated internally. Premature announcements can lead to confusion or awkward retractions if plans change at the last minute.
Start with a Strong Opener
Draw readers in with a compelling first line. Whether it’s a personal anecdote, a bold statement, or a reflective thought, the opening should set the tone and make people want to read more. Think of it as your hook, something memorable that captures your voice and journey.
Show Genuine Gratitude
Acknowledging the people who supported your growth adds warmth and humility to your announcement. Whether it's mentors, colleagues, managers, or your entire team, take a moment to appreciate those who contributed to your success. Gratitude makes your post more authentic and human.
Clearly State Your New Role and Company
Don’t bury the lede, make it obvious what your new position is and where I’ll work (if it’s a new company). Even though this might seem like the most noticeable part, it’s critical for professional visibility and networking.
Share the Wins That Got You Here
This is your moment to shine, so highlight key achievements that led to your promotion. Focus on tangible results or milestones that made a difference. Use data or actual outcomes when possible to show my impact, while keeping the tone celebratory, not boastful.
Keep It Personal and Real
Make sure your message sounds like you. It’s perfectly fine to share the ups and downs that made the promotion meaningful, whether it was a period of doubt, long nights, or a personal turning point. The most relatable posts are often the ones that reflect vulnerability and growth.
Add Visuals for More Impact
A great photo or short video can bring your story to life. Consider adding a team photo, a snapshot from my early days at the company, or even a personal milestone moment. Visuals help stop the scroll and make my post more engaging.
Tag the People Who Helped You
Give credit where it’s due by tagging mentors, managers, teammates, or collaborators who contributed to my success. This shows appreciation and also helps boost the post’s visibility by notifying those individuals and their networks.
Include Industry-Related Hashtags
To increase reach, I will wrap up my post with relevant hashtags. I will stick to a few strategic ones, related to leadership, professional growth, or my specific field, to ensure my post reaches people beyond my immediate network.

A Step-by-Step Process To Announcing Your Promotion On LinkedIn

To begin the process, go to your LinkedIn profile. Click on your profile photo at the top right corner and select "View Profile" from the dropdown menu.
Find the Experience Section
Once you're on your profile, scroll down to the Experience section. Here, you will see your current and past positions listed.
Choose to Either Update Your Current Position or Add a New One
You have two options when it comes to announcing your promotion on LinkedIn. You can either update your existing position to reflect your new job title or add a new position to your profile. If your promotion is within the same company, this will show your career progression without creating two separate entries for the same employer.
If your promotion is with a new company, adding a new position will automatically list your new employer at the top of your Experience section. Either way, LinkedIn will prompt you to announce your promotion with a post to your network.
Update Your Existing Position
On rare occasions, you might change your current title to the new one to showcase your promotion within an organization. Some reasons you might choose this option include:
- Your new title better represents the level that I’ve been working at all along, and my employer and I agree that it’s appropriate to use the new title for my entire employment period. In this instance, it makes sense to update my current title, and I won’t have to worry about the appearance of an employment gap on my profile.
- I prefer my network not to know what my previous title was. This is a scarce scenario, though it could happen. Just be mindful that I might have an employment gap to explain since I’m hypothetically removing the time in the previous position when I update the title.
Regardless of which scenario represents my situation, here’s how to add a promotion on LinkedIn with the same company by updating my current position title:
Navigate to Your LinkedIn Profile Page
Go to your LinkedIn profile and navigate to your photo near the top right-hand side. From there, click on the “View profile” button.
Scroll Down to the Experience Section
Scroll down to your Experience section and click the pencil icon to the right of the “+” icon. That will open an expanded version of my experience. Next, click the pencil icon associated with the position I want to update.
Add Your New Position Title
In the “Title” field, delete the current title and add your new title.
Update Any Other Pertinent Details
Scroll down the page to update any other pertinent details that require it, such as:
- Start date
- End date
- Description
- Profile headline
Save the Update
Click “Save.” Your update will now show in your Experience section.
How to Add a Promotion on LinkedIn With a New Company
To add a promotion on LinkedIn with a new company, follow the same steps as how to add a promotion on LinkedIn with the same company (adding a new position within the same company) outlined above, with one exception:
- Enter your new company vs. my current company
- When I do this, LinkedIn will show my latest entry and company information at the top of my profile’s Experience section
How to Share Updates With Your Network
LinkedIn makes it relatively easy to announce your promotion by prompting you. After I follow the steps above to add and save a new position, I’ll see a pop-up that says, “Position added! Share this update with my network.”
Underneath this statement, LinkedIn automatically generates an announcement I can use: I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as [position title] at [company or organization name]!
Posting a Promotion on LinkedIn: Now or Later
If I prefer not to post the announcement at that time, I can exit the pop-up screen. If I post about the promotion immediately, I can select the “Next” button at the bottom of the pop-up to edit the announcement.
Whether I choose to post immediately after I make my update when LinkedIn prompts me to, or I prefer to wait a bit and then make the announcement, here are some example announcements I can use as a template to create my own.
